Getting Back to Running

Today I went for my first post-marathon run!

Yesterday, I went to Central Park in the morning to watch some of the 60K race (who does that!?) and also to see my friend run the Enormous Elephants 10K (much more reasonable, and hello, elephants!). It was a GORGEOUS day. I brought gloves but never needed them and I didn't have on a jacket at all. What a difference 24 hours makes...

So I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that I have not only met, but surpassed my fundraising goal! I am so relieved to be finished with fundraising, which is arguably more nerve wracking than training. I am thankful for everyone who contributed, the generosity they have shown is really overwhelming. I know some really good people.

Looking Ahead: Week of August 29

Today marks the start of week 14 of my marathon training plan! We are now in phase three of training, the intervals phase. This past week was a recovery week which included an amazing and refreshing team yoga class in Central Park and my first attempt at deep water running which I loved and cannot wait to try again. The week ended with a long run over the George Washington Bridge into New Jersey and through the very hilly Palisades Park.

Looking Ahead: Week of August 15th

This week was ROUGH. We are having something of a heat wave in NYC that has caused most everyone to hibernate indoors. I was unable to complete my run on Saturday because real feel temperatures were well over 100 degrees even early in the morning so I called it quits about a mile early. The Long Training Run organized by NYRR for Sunday was canceled and our coaches advised us to run inside. In order to prevent dying from boredom, I went to the gym with one of my teammates and we did one hour on the treadmill followed by an hour on the elliptical. Having someone to run with and switching up the equipment made it more bearable than a usual treadmill run and after the short walk home in the heat, I'm glad we played it safe.

Looking Ahead: Week of August 8th

Here we are in WEEK ELEVEN of training, which means Wednesday will be the halfway point in this training plan. Things are going well despite a minor setback this week that has worked itself out. During Wednesday's night's hill repeats, my left knee really started bothering me on the uphills. I talked to our coach and he had me do some flat running while the team continued the repeats and that felt fine, so I still got in the time, just not the hills. Thursday I took a rest day and did an easy run on Friday to make sure that everything was good (luckily, it was!).

Looking Ahead: Week of July 25th

This heatwave is out of control! It has made for some hard runs, but I've been taking it very slow and getting them done. Saturday was Long Training #1 which is an organized training run put on by NYRR. Due to the heat, I only ran one of three loops of Central Park calling it quits around the 10K mark but I met my time goal of running 80 minutes, so I consider it a success.

Looking Ahead: Week of July 11th

Happy 7/11 day! I'll have to see if there's a 7 Eleven around Central Park where I can grab a free slushie after tonight's strength training workout. Last week's heat wave was pretty terrible, I think all of the humidity and pressure changes got to me and I actually called out of work on Friday because I felt like I had an elephant stomping on my head. Luckily, by Saturday morning it cooled down and I had an insanely comfortable long run in weather that was almost dare I say chilly when running near water.
